One calculator for every implement
Every ground-driven implement (plow, disk, cultivator, planter, drill, sprayer, baler, cutter or combine) follows the same relationship between width, speed and efficiency. Choose an implement above to load typical values, then edit them to match your machine. The result is the machine’s effective field capacity in acres per hour, plus acres per day, time for your field and optional fuel per acre.
Typical rates by implement

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moldboard plow | 8 ft | 4.5 mph | 80% | 3.5 | 35 |
| Chisel plow | 15 ft | 5.5 mph | 80% | 8.0 | 80 |
| Tandem disk harrow | 20 ft | 6 mph | 80% | 11.6 | 116 |
| Field cultivator | 40 ft | 6 mph | 80% | 23.3 | 233 |
| Grain drill / air seeder | 20 ft | 5 mph | 70% | 8.5 | 85 |
| Row-crop planter (12-row, 30 in) | 30 ft | 5 mph | 65% | 11.8 | 118 |
| Row cultivator | 30 ft | 5 mph | 80% | 14.5 | 145 |
| Boom sprayer | 90 ft | 12 mph | 65% | 85.1 | 851 |

| Baler (swath width) | 15 ft | 5 mph | 70% | 6.4 | 64 |
| Rotary cutter (batwing) | 15 ft | 5 mph | 80% | 7.3 | 73 |

The formula
The theoretical field capacity is the same calculation at 100% efficiency. The ratio of effective to theoretical capacity is the field efficiency. This calculator shows both so you can see how much capacity is lost to real-world conditions.
Field efficiency by operation
| Operation | Typical efficiency range |
|---|---|
| Primary and secondary tillage (plow, chisel, disk, field cultivator) | 70–90% |
| Row-crop planting | 50–75% |
| Drilling / air seeding small grain | 60–80% |
| Boom spraying | 55–80% |
| Mowing / rotary cutting | 70–85% |
| Baling | 60–80% |
| Combining | 65–80% |
Operations with frequent stops (planting, spraying) sit at the lower end because of refilling; simple, continuous passes (tillage, mowing) score higher. Long fields, wider machines and GPS guidance push the number up; short, irregular fields push it down.
Using capacity to plan your season
Once you have a rate, work backwards from your deadline: days needed = acres ÷ (acres per hour × hours per day). For 1,200 acres with a planter that covers 11.8 ac/hr for 10 hours a day, you need 10.2 working days. If your planting window offers only 6 suitable days, you know before the season starts that you need a bigger machine, a second planter or more efficient logistics.
- Compare options. Run the calculator for a current implement and a wider replacement to see the payback in hours saved.
- Price custom work. Multiply hours by your cost per hour, or use fuel per acre as a starting point.
- Check tractor fit. Confirm that your tractor has enough hydraulic, PTO and drawbar capacity for the implement width you plan.
Planting? Work out how much seed to order with the seeding rate calculator, then verify the stand with the plant population calculator. Not sure of the acres? Measure them with the acreage calculator, or use the simpler acres per hour calculator for a quick answer.
Specific tools: sprayer gallons per acre, bush hog acres per hour, mowing acres per hour.
Frequently asked questions
What is effective field capacity?
It is the number of acres a machine actually covers per hour in real conditions: theoretical capacity (width × speed ÷ 8.25) multiplied by field efficiency.
How do I find the field efficiency of my machine?
Time a full field with your hour meter, divide acres by hours to get the effective rate, then divide that by the theoretical rate (width × speed ÷ 8.25). The result is your efficiency.
Which implement covers the most acres per hour?
Wide, fast implements such as boom sprayers and large field cultivators lead the list, often 25–85+ acres per hour. Slow, heavy operations such as plowing, or narrow ones like a small mower, are much lower.
Does horsepower change acres per hour?
Not directly. Horsepower determines whether your tractor can pull the implement at the desired speed. Acres per hour is set by working width, speed and efficiency.
How many acres per day can I plant?
A 30-ft planter at 5 mph and 65–70% efficiency covers about 12–13 acres per hour, or roughly 118–127 acres in a 10-hour day. Use the calculator with your own planter width.
