This planting population calculator (also called a plant population calculator or stand count calculator) converts what you see in the field into plants per acre. It works for corn, soybeans, sunflowers, sorghum and other row crops, in any row spacing.
Three ways to work out plant population
Plant population, plants per acre, is the yardstick for stand establishment. This calculator has three modes:
- Count plants after emergence to find your real stand (and emergence %).
- From seed spacing to see what the planter is putting in the ground.
- Find spacing to set the planter for a target population.
Counting plants: the stand-count method
Steps:
- Pick 4–6 representative spots across the field, avoiding headlands.
- Measure a length of row and count every healthy plant in it. Using the length for 1/1000 acre keeps the math simple: multiply the count by 1,000.
- Average the counts. Enter each count above and the calculator averages them and converts to plants per acre.
| Row spacing | Row length for 1/1000 acre | Row spacing | Row length for 1/1000 acre |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 in | 69.70 ft | 22 in | 23.76 ft |
| 10 in | 52.27 ft | 30 in | 17.42 ft |
| 15 in | 34.85 ft | 36 in | 14.52 ft |
| 20 in | 26.14 ft | 38 in | 13.76 ft |
Example: in 30-inch rows, a 17.42-ft section holds 32 plants → 32 × 1,000 = 32,000 plants per acre.
From seed spacing to population
6,272,640 is 43,560 sq ft × 144 sq in per sq ft. For 30-inch rows and 6.5 inches between seeds: 6,272,640 ÷ (30 × 6.5) = 32,167 seeds per acre. Multiply by your expected emergence to get the final stand.
| Seed spacing (30-inch rows) | Seeds per acre |
|---|---|
| 5.5 in | 38,016 |
| 6.0 in | 34,848 |
| 6.5 in | 32,167 |
| 7.0 in | 29,870 |
| 7.5 in | 27,878 |
| 8.0 in | 26,136 |
Setting the planter for a target population
To reach 32,000 plants/ac with 95% emergence you must plant 33,684 seeds/ac. At 30-inch rows that is a spacing of 6.21 inches between seeds. Always verify actual singulation and spacing in the field. The seed meter setting is only a starting point.
Corn plant population by row spacing
For corn, the calculator defaults to the most common case: 30-inch rows, where 17.42 ft (17 ft 5 in) of row is 1/1000 acre. Count the plants in that length at four or more spots and multiply the average by 1,000 to get the population per acre. Thirty-two plants in 17.42 ft is 32,000 plants per acre. To see how many seeds the planter should drop, use the Find spacing tab: at 30-inch rows and 95% emergence, a 32,000 plants/ac target needs about 33,700 seeds per acre, or one seed every 6.2 inches.
Corn is bought by the seed count, so the corn seeding rate calculator converts a target population into 80,000-seed units and total cost for your acres. Multiply plants per acre by the field size from the acreage calculator to get total plants.
Soybean, cotton and other row crops
The same three methods work as a soybean plant population calculator or a cotton plant population calculator: change the row spacing to match your planter (commonly 15 or 30 inches for soybeans, 36 to 40 inches for cotton) and count or space accordingly. This is also what people mean by a “row spacing and plant population calculator”: row spacing is one of the two numbers every method here uses, alongside either a plant count, a seed spacing or a target population.
Plant population vs. corn yield
A corn yield calculator by population is a different tool from this one: it estimates yield from ear counts, kernel rows and kernel weight, while this calculator finds your stand (plants per acre) from a count or a planter setting. Stand count is normally the first step, since yield-by-population methods need an accurate population figure as an input.
Emergence and stand loss
Emergence % = plants per acre ÷ seeds planted per acre × 100. If you planted 34,000 seeds and counted 31,500 plants, emergence is 92.6%. Low emergence usually points to cold, crusted or cloddy seedbeds, planting depth, seed-to-soil contact, insects, disease or planter problems. Comparing stand counts across the field also reveals row-unit issues.
To turn a population target into pounds of seed, use the seeding rate calculator. To plan your planting schedule, see the acres per hour calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate plants per acre?
Count the plants in a measured length of row, divide by the area that length covers (row length × row spacing) and multiply by 43,560. For 30-inch rows, counting a 17.42-ft length and multiplying by 1,000 does the same thing.
How long is 1/1000 of an acre?
It depends on row spacing: 43.56 ÷ row spacing (in feet). For 30-inch rows it is 17.42 ft (17 ft 5 in); for 15-inch rows, 34.85 ft; for 36-inch rows, 14.52 ft.
What corn plant population should I aim for?
Grain corn is commonly planted for final stands in the low-to-mid 30,000s per acre, but the ideal number depends on hybrid, soil, moisture and yield environment. Check your seed company and extension recommendations.
How do I convert seed spacing to population?
Population = 6,272,640 ÷ (row spacing in inches × seed spacing in inches). At 30 inches and 6 inches, that is 34,848 seeds per acre.
What is a good emergence percentage?
Under good conditions, emergence of 90–95% of seeds planted is typical. Lower numbers suggest stress, planter issues or poor seedbed conditions worth investigating.
Is this the same as a plants per acre calculator?
Yes. Plant population and plants per acre describe the same measurement; this page is a plants per acre calculator that also works from seed spacing or a target, not only from a plant count.
Does this work as a corn population per acre calculator for any hybrid?
Yes, the math does not depend on the hybrid or seed brand, including seed-company tools such as a DEKALB plant population calculator: they use the same stand-count and spacing formulas shown here. Enter your own row spacing and counts for an accurate number.
